The Copacabana promenade is a pavement landscape in large scale (4 kilometres long). It was completed in 1970 and has used a black and white Portuguese pavement design since its origin in the 1930s: the pattern exhibits large curves resembling the waves of the sea.
It is a traditional-style pavement used for many pedestrian areas in Portugal and old Portuguese colonies ( Brazil, Macao), with a mosaic of black and white stones .
The Copacabana promenade was designed by Roberto Burle Marx, a famous Brazilian landscape architect.
He was a polymath interested in graphic design, tapestry, line and shape, and managed in a completely original way to transfer those ideas and textures from paper and fabric onto the ground.
